Gymnasts from Wings Rhythmic Gymnastics, Sofiia Chalbash and Alisa Volchan, both Ukranian refugees residing in Athlone, participated in the International OPEN Gimnasia Vitoria in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. The competition featured top gymnasts from various countries including Latvia, Lithuania and Italy and took place on Saturday, June 17th. The event was streamed live on Youtube and myrhythmic.com streaming platform. This marks the first international tournament for the WRGC since its establishment in 2020.
There was more than 700 participants in the International OPEN Vitoria, taking place in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. There was 2 panels comprised of 19 judges of different nationalities that scored the gymnasts based on their artistry, execution and difficulty. This is the 4th year this event is held in Vitoria-Gasteiz. High profile gymnasts participated in the event, including Tara Dragas, FIG 2023 World Cup participant in Sofia, Bulgaria and European Championship qualifier in Tel Aviv in 2022.
Sofiia Chalbash finished 17th in the in the FIG (International Gymnastics Federation) Junior category performing two routines: hoop and ribbon. Alisa Volchan competed in the pre-espoir category with hoop.
"Both gymnasts had to stop their training due to the war in Ukraine for many months. But they are now working on getting back into the flow of competitions representing our club, Wings Rhythmic Gymnastics. It's great to have such highly motivated female athletes, they are a great inspiration for all of us"
said Enya Tierney, their head coach.
